Day 1: For the foodie with a big heart

By Giselle Wedemire

Our first pick for the Picky Bitchez's 12 Days of Christmas (Shopping) is a destination -- or an event -- rather than an actual store. We know we're breaking our own rules here, but with an all-vegan holiday bake sale in town, we really couldn't resist.

On Dec. 13, Calgary will be hosting its very first vegan holiday bake sale, and it promises to be just as amazing as the annual vegan bake sale held in the city every May. We are so excited about this event, and we think that with all the sweet (and savoury) vegan treats up for grabs, they'd make for a fantastic gift.*

There will be tasty vegan items like butter tarts, shortbread, nanaimo bars, and gingerbread available, as well as a selection of gluten-free treats like brownies to choose from.

Add in the fact that all of the bake sale's proceeds will benefit two amazing animal-friendly charities (Alberta Spay & Neuter Task Force and the Rescue and Sanctuary for Threatened Animals), and you've got a recipe for a great gift for the compassionate yet picky foodie in your life.

All that's missing is a great tin to wrap up your various confections and some ribbons to top off a pretty epic Christmas present. After all that shopping, you'll probably want to reward yourself with a fresh vegan pastry. So it might be a good idea to budget for a few extra sweets purchased to ward off the temptation to steal your loved one's baked goods for quality control purposes.

Where to find it: 6909 Farrell Road SE, Calgary

*Be sure to bring cash, though...the Calgary Vegan Bake Sales aren't usually debit or credit card-friendly.
